Julius (Yoel) Nadelsticher (Nudelsztecher) was born in Radzyn Poland, possibly on 1st September 1868. Julius was the son of Boruch Schlomo (Solomon) Nudelsztecher and Liba (Leah) nee Kupperwasser. He emigrated to England around 1888. Two of Julius’ brothers, Simon and Davis and his mother also came to London. There were two Davis Needlestichers who came to London. As well as Julius’ brother the ‘second’ Davis was a relation, I have not been able to work out the relationship. The second Davis’ parents were Manuel and Betsy Nudelsztecher nee Feldman (names as anglicised by Davis). I’m hoping someone out there knows the relationship. Julius later used his first name as his surname, he was known as Mr N Julius, I do not think this name change was ever made official. His children also used Julius as their surname. This pattern of adopting their first name as a surname was followed by his brother’s family. The separate gallery of Julius’ relations includes pictures kindly provided by descendents of Rachel (Temkin), Simon Needlesticher’s daughter, and are pictures of Simon’s children, I hope I have identified them correctly.
Julius was married twice. His first wife was Miriam Rebecca Geetleman who died in 1900. There is a collection of pictures of Julius’ children and some of his grandchildren by Miriam Rebecca in a separate gallery on the photos page. Julius’ second wife Rebecca Geetleman, my grandmother, was Miriam Rebecca’s niece!
As his name suggests Julius was a tailor. Unlike many immigrant tailors who were unskilled Julius was a trained tailor who specialised in ladies tailoring, particularly mantles (capes) and coats. His business was originally in the East End of London where he settled like so many immigrants. He and his family moved to Westcliff on Sea in Essex around 1916. My mother Leila was born in Westcliff in 1919. She was the only one of Julius’ children to be registered with Julius as her surname, all the other children were registered as Nadelsticher. The family returned to London when Julius retired around 1933, this time suburban North West London.
My mother’s memories of Julius and those of everyone I have spoken to were of a lovely man. Nobody had a bad word to say about Julius which I have discovered is very unusual! He was apparently a very generous man who would give his last shilling away which my mother remembered made Rebecca’s life rather difficult! Julius died on Christmas day 1946.
